Abstract
The advent of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has precipitated an existential inflection point for marketing leadership, as systems capable of autonomous campaign optimization and real-time content generation have subsumed traditional strategic functions. This study addresses the competency gap between legacy brand stewardship and the demands of algorithmic governance. Through a multi-method investigation encompassing longitudinal organizational analysis, a global leader survey, and pioneering case studies, a distinct pathway for evolution was identified. The findings reveal that superior performance, marked by significantly higher marketing Return on Investment (ROI) and accelerated market responsiveness, correlates with the formalization of algorithmic stewardship. This emergent executive function prioritizes strategic direction, ethical oversight, and the continuous curation of AI systems over hands-on management. Consequently, this study contributes to the Chief Algorithmic Officer (CAO) framework, a novel governance model that delineates this transformed mandate, its core competencies, and the necessary organizational autonomy of the CAO role, distinct from purely technical roles. This redefinition argues for leadership metamorphosis rather than obsolescence, positioning marketing executives as the essential human architects of intelligent, brand-aligned automation.
