Abstract

This research dismantles the persistent narrative of African megacities as infrastructure-barren by spotlighting the counterintuitive rise of globally scaling startups from Lagos, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam. The central inquiry examines how these ventures systematically bypass critical gaps to achieve innovation and scale. A mixed-methods approach—Social Network Analysis of 500 startups, 50 in-depth founder interviews, and comparative city case studies—uncovers a replicable three-stage “Bypass Innovation” process: Diagnose, Hack, Scale. The analysis demonstrates that triumph stems not from a single technology but from architecting Adaptive Platform Ecosystems, as exemplified by fintech applications that leverage mobile money networks as de facto infrastructure. These ecosystems forge a “Constraint-Advantage,” transforming local infrastructural workarounds into lean, globally exportable business models. Consequently, this work proposes and defines the “Lagos Model” as a seminal framework that directly challenges the orthodox, linear “infrastructure-first” development paradigm and posits systemic constraint as a potent catalyst for disruptive urban economic growth.
